Authenticity
Today I want to circle back to one of our core values that we talked about this past Sunday… and how it relates to our service on the worship team.
The first value we talked about was… Authenticity. What do we mean by that? It means that…
Nobody’s perfect, but everyone can be authentic. Recognizing the gap between where I am and where God is leading me is where authenticity begins. We are only as strong as we are honest.
Jesus said in John 4:23-24
“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Jesus was trying to tell the woman at the well, that sometimes we make worship about the wrong things… places… rituals… etc.
I think we still have those tendencies.
We make it about music… plans… feelings… traditions.
And so how do we make the shift… and worship Jesus authentically, in spirit and in truth…
1. Before worship is corporate, it’s personal.
Jesus said true worshippers will worship in spirit and truth.
That means that they don’t need a place… it can happen anywhere at any time.
Before we lead in public, we need to seek Him in private.
We don’t seek him in private SO THAT we can lead in public. We seek him in private because He’s worthy and we are in awe of Him.
2. Before we pour out, Jesus wants to pour in.
Sometimes our “gap” is that we minister from an empty tank.
We’re trying to do the ministry of Jesus, without being filled by Jesus.
Before Jesus sent his disciples out, he gave them instructions, the Holy Spirit, and he prayed for them.
I believe Jesus wants to pour into you and me each week before we minister, but we have to slow down and give him space and time.
3. Everything I do is worship
Sometimes the gap is a less than integrated lifestyle. Like the old testament verse Jesus quoted… We worship him with our lips, but our hearts are far from Him.
How I love my spouse is worship.
The choices I make to pursue holiness is worship.
How I work is worship.
How I treat the stranger is worship.
The musical worship we lead in on Sundays is simply an extension of the other 6 days we spend worshipping God AUTHENTICALLY.
